Tested for You: “Melanin Spot Eraser” for Hyperpigmentation by Melumé Skinscience

Hyperpigmentation has a wide variety of causes. It results from an overproduction of melanin. This substance, produced by the body, together with the blood pigment and carotene, gives the skin its color. However, the pigment melanin—which is produced by cells called melanocytes—accounts for the majority of this color. A distinction is made between dark (eumelanin) and light/reddish (pheomelanin) melanin. The more pigment present, the darker the skin’s color.

Hyperpigmentation occurs whenever the body produces too much melanin. This can be caused by years of intense UV exposure. These are then referred to as sunspots or age spots (lentigines). However, hormonal fluctuations can also lead to dark discoloration. Hormone-related melasma (also known as the “pregnancy mask”) usually appears as symmetrical, darker patches on the face. The birth control pill can also cause melasma. Inflammation such as acne, pimples, injuries, or medical procedures can lead to what is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Various active ingredients are used in cosmetics to treat pigmentation spots by lightening the brown patches. These include vitamin C, niacinamide, and azelaic acid. Certain lightening peptides and kojic acid are also among them. Kojic acid is a natural substance produced during the fermentation of fungi—particularly in the production of rice wine, soy sauce, or miso. In the skin, it inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production, thereby helping to lighten the spots.

Hyperpigmentation corrector for an even complexion

Melumé’s “Melanin Spot Eraser” features a whitening cocktail with seven active ingredients. These include a kojic acid derivative, so-called lightening peptides (Starlight Peptides), HyWhite, alpha-arbutin, and other substances. The exclusive GMOD Complex combats pigmentation directly at its source by inhibiting tyrosinase. This not only lightens existing spots but also prevents new ones from forming.

The Spot Eraser was developed to visibly reduce all types of pigmentation spots—whether melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, stubborn dark spots, UV-induced skin damage, acne scars, or persistent brown and gray age spots. It contains 93 percent natural ingredients, is vegan, and is fragrance-free. Made in Germany.

Here’s how I use the Spot Eraser

I apply it directly to the dark spots on my body that I want to lighten, as needed, in the morning and at night. It’s really easy to do with the pipette tip. Of course, I apply it to previously cleansed skin and before applying any other skincare products. If you want to use it over a large area, spread a thin, even layer over all larger areas with discoloration, such as the cheeks, forehead, or jawline.

Once a week, as recommended, I also exfoliate the problem areas. I’ve already noticed a slight lightening of the spots after just one week. That’s what the manufacturer claims, too. Or am I just wishful thinking? Either way, it makes me feel good. Of course, I know that longer and more regular use is necessary for more noticeable results.

On average, the first signs of lightening from kojic acid are visible within 4–6 weeks with daily use, which corresponds to the skin’s natural 28-day renewal cycle (which lengthens with age!). According to studies, most users with stubborn pigment spots or severe hyperpigmentation notice a significant difference between 8 and 12 weeks.

Who is behind Melumé?

The brand’s founder is Harriët Ploeger. A native of the Netherlands, she has over 40 years of experience and a proven track record in developing global products and brands—from the initial idea through to market launch and beyond. Thanks to her insider knowledge, Harriët realized that all too often, advertising claims do not match the actual concentrations of active ingredients—which means that many products simply fail to deliver the promised results.

Frustrated by these misleading claims—and by the dominance of overpriced brands that prioritize marketing over performance—Harriët mobilized her network of trusted industry professionals, dedicated researchers, and experts in high-performance skincare. This led to the creation of Melumé Skinscience. The brand offers highly effective, scientifically grounded formulations at a reasonable price—based on clinically tested ingredients, backed by research, and developed for anyone who expects their skincare to truly work.

Harriët Ploeger: “We develop our products with the utmost care, using cutting-edge science as well as plant-based, biocompatible, and bioavailable ingredients. While we prioritize a high proportion of natural ingredients, we also use safe, proven synthetic substances—specifically when they enhance the product’s performance, stability, or preservation. Every single ingredient is carefully evaluated—not only for its effectiveness but also for its contribution to the integrity of the overall formula. If an ingredient does not meet our highest standards for safety and skin tolerance, it is not used.”
