Concentrates or serum—which is stronger? One key difference is the dosage form. As the name suggests, a concentrate contains active ingredients in very high concentrations. It is packaged in small portions in a glass or plastic ampoule. These are usually used as a course of treatment and achieve results even in the short term. A serum, on the other hand, contains fewer active ingredients than a concentrate (but three times more than a cream!) and delivers lasting results when used continuously. Serums should be part of your daily beauty routine.
High dose, big effect
The mostly thin, almost pure ingredients in a concentrate are real “active ingredient bombs.” They provide the skin with tailor-made doses and penetrate deeper into the skin than a serum. In this case, the saying “the more, the better” actually applies. Concentrates are available for a wide variety of problems. Depending on the formulation, they can be used for different skin needs such as anti-aging, dehydration, irritation, or dull skin.
They are usually applied twice a day. If you only use them once, it is preferable to apply them in the evening, as the skin undergoes natural regeneration at night. Concentrates can be used as a treatment over several days or weeks to strengthen and revitalize the skin and address problems such as blemishes or lack of firmness. Ideally, you should do this two to three times a year.
Concentrates should always be applied to cleansed skin and gently patted in. This is followed by day or night care or a serum plus a day or night cream. Alternatively, a few drops of the product can be mixed with your face cream. The comparatively high price of concentrates is due to the high dosage of the active ingredient and is therefore justified. However, economical use is sufficient here, and results are achieved quickly.
Concentrates by Chris Farrell
The German institute brand Chris Farrell is known for its powerful “problem-solving” products. It has 12 different concentrates in its portfolio alone. I chose four from the extensive range. Incidentally, all Chris Farrell products are produced in Germany by the company itself, are dermatologically tested, and are Peta certified.

To travel during my profession as a beauty journalist was never enough for my. Also my six month on a world trip didn’t do it. It always attracts me to other cities, foreign countries, on roadtrips and places I don’t know yet. But I am not only interested in “culture” and “cream”, I am also fascinated by people who have stories to tell . Such unique experiences I want to share with you.
I confess: ampoules for me are always a case on special occasions. Either because I’m currently writing an article about it and then I convinced myself to use some again. Or because my skin is just tired / dry / irritated / exposed to environmental influences and needs an emergency kit. And that is exactly what the ampoules for, which I would like to tell this little story: Some time ago, as part of a research for an article, I had tested peeling pads with “gentle” fruit acids … on request also suitable for my sensitive skin. But shortly after using it, I looked like a lobster. In my distress I picked up the “Phytoactive Anti-Oxidative Ampoules” from Royal Fern … and could literally watch the redness dissapear. Sounds like an advertsing now, but it truly happenend.
And what is the “power substance” in these ampoules?
Highly effective antioxidants, above all extract of fern, a plant that has been proven to be incredibly resilient to the environment. And in popular medicine it is well-known and valued for its anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects – for example in South America, where it has traditionally been used for centuries to heal skin diseases and wounds. Its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects have also been proven in current studies – even more so, its concentrated anti-aging power (keeps moisture, regenerates, inhibits collagen and elastin breakdown, inhibits hyperpigmentation). And you can see and feel that very clearly – even if you don’t have a lobster face. And yes, I now have the intention to use the small bottles more often (for reasons see above), even if they cost a small fortune.

Since many years I am working as a freelance writer of beauty and lifestyle topics for magazines like Vogue or Glamour. What drives me again and again: not only the product or the trend, it is the people and the story behind – and what it does to us. In addition, my job often takes me to the most beautiful places in the world. Even in private one likes to find me in one or the other wellness location, research not excluded. Culture and Cream, then. Always in the luggage: fragrance, sunprotection and lipstick. What color? Red. What else
