The Sunny Power Plant: the Sea Buckthorn

Wild herbs are very sparse at the moment. Often they are still hiding under the snow. That’s why our oecotrophologist and plant expert Sabine Häberlein has chosen sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) for this month, a plant that brings sunshine into the day through its color alone. But not only that, it is downright indispensable, especially at this time of year, as it strengthens our immune system.stem stärkt. Strong immune system thanks to the fruits Responsible for this are the high contents of vitamins C and E. Sea buckthorn berries contain between 200 mg and 1000 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit, depending on the altitude. The daily requirement for adult women is 95 mg of vitamin C. Men need 110 mg of it per day. 100 g of fruit also cover the daily requirement of vitamin E. Concentrated healing power In addition, the orange berries are rich in B vitamins and thus promote concentration. The contents of provitamin A and flavanoids are also quite respectable. They reduce the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, have an anti-inflammatory effect and protect cells. The oil produced from the seeds has wound-healing properties. It protects the skin from the sun and helps with sunburn. Kernel oil also has an anti-aging effect on the skin. Culinary delights The raw berries are extremely sour. When boiled down, they can tolerate a little sweetness. You can process them into juice, fruit spread, jelly, liqueur or desserts. They also taste good in muesli and in cakes or pies. The taste of sea buckthorn goes well with vegetable, tofu and meat dishes. A tasty tea can be brewed from fresh or dried sea buckthorn berries. However, the sea buckthorn has one drawback: the harvest is not so easy. Long pointed thorns defend the fruit and sometimes injure anyone who wants to get their hands on the orange berries. I prefer to make things easy for myself and buy either dried berries or, even better, an unsweetened juice from the health food store. This whole fruit juice is characterized by the fact that the whole fruits are ground and you thus benefit from the entire spectrum of ingredients. Recipe: Hot sea buckthorn drink Put 1 tablespoon of unsweetened sea buckthorn whole fruit juice in a glass and mix it with hot water (60 °C). If you find the taste too sour, sweeten the drink with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of honey.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: Body Lotion „Better Aging“ from Natalie’s Cosmetic

Dr. Natalie Lindner‘s Munich-based Doctor Brand specializes in body care products. That’s quite an advantage over the “we-can-do-everything” brands. “I’ve been a self-proclaimed skincare junkie since I was 15 and have always strived to create a body care brand that matches the high standards of facial care companies,” says the physician. Environmentally conscious and consumer-friendly Natalie’s products are free from parabens, PEGs, mineral oil, sodium lauryl sulfates (aggressive surfactants), silicones, colorants, fillers, allergens and substances of animal origin. To best protect the environment, it uses R-PET & FSC certified recycled paper for its packaging and recycled HDPE for its bottles. It sources all ingredients from Germany and makes a point of ensuring that they are evidence-based and that their efficacy has been proven through studies. Body lotions for every need The portfolio includes five body lotions for “Hydration”, “Better Aging”, “Glow”, “Smooth” for ingrown hairs and “Purity” for blemishes. I chose the “Better Aging” body lotion because it is supposed to fight several signs of aging at once, such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation. In addition to the anti-aging vitamins A, C, E, it contains moisturizing active ingredients such as multi-molecular hyaluronic acid and squalane, nourishing organic shea butter and cell-renewing substances such as glycolic acid and bakuchiol, the plant-based alternative to retinol. Care mission fulfilled The consistency of the body lotion is pleasant, neither too liquid nor too creamy. It spreads well and is absorbed quickly. You can dress immediately without fear of stains on the fabric. In fact, the skin, especially my dry shins and upper arms, feels smoother after the first application. Well, of course, glycolic acid and retinol remove the dead skin cells. And with that, I’m already very satisfied when the skin looks and feels smoother. In addition, “Better Aging” is also supposed to improve wrinkles, scars and stretch marks on the body. However, I can not serve with that… „Better Aging Body Lotion“ from Natalie’s Cosmetic, 300 ml, 179 Euro… weiterlesen

Tested for you: “Hair Serum” from Doctor Duve Medical Skin Care

The “Hair Serum” that I present today is not a new product. But for me for years the best proven helper for beautiful, strong hair. Especially in winter, I always apply the hair serum cure over two to three months. Hair loss is not an issue for me and should never become one. I simply want to prevent it. However, I notice that in the cold season my hair is simply laxer and collapses faster. A clear sign that the roots can use a booster. Non-greasy hair serum In the morning and evening I distribute two to three pipette strokes in the hair and gently massage the hair serum with my fingertips in circular motions. Works perfectly in both wet and dry hair, because the watery liquid is not greasy. The fact that the hair visibly and noticeably grows back more vital and also stronger, is due to the better supply of the scalp by the contained Growth Factors, key ingredient of the Doctor Duve product line. Caffeine additionally stimulates the activity of the hair roots. A proven combination of urea, organic acids such as lactic acid, glycine, niacinamide and fructose ensures permanent moisturization of the scalp. As a result, the hair roots are anchored again stronger, remain healthy and active longer. Strengthening for hair and nails If I have the feeling that I would like to do something more for my hair, I also swallow two of the “Hair & Nail Booster” capsules from the Doctor Duve line every day. They strengthen the hair and the nails at the same time. “Unlike conventional monoextract preparations, they contain a triplet of different millet extracts. This triplet impresses with its excellent quality and consistent concentration. Furthermore, millet is particularly rich in silica and linoleic acid,” explains Dr. Stefan Duve, dermatologist in Munich.Other “goodies” in the capsules include sufficient vitamins, trace elements, and structural minerals and proteins, which play an important role in strengthening hair and nails. 7 Tips Against Winter Depression: This Is What You Can Do

The days are getting shorter, the light is getting less, life is retreating indoors again: In the cold season, many people suffer from winter depression. But you don’t have to give in to it without a fight – with a few tips and tricks, you can help yourself get a grip on approaching winter depression. How winter depression actually develops? Winter depression is mainly caused by the lack of light. In the cold months, we usually get much less sunlight than in the warm season. This leads to listlessness and fatigue. We tend to curl up at home and move less in the fresh air. 7 tips sagainst winter blues But you can beat the winter depression – or the winter blues. With a few simple tips and tricks. You can find out what they are in the following. Tip 1: Fill up with enough light Admittedly, this tip sounds a bit ironic, since it is precisely the lack of light that is the most common trigger for winter depression. For this reason, you should make sure that you get as much light as you can. Go outside at least once a day.Even when the sun is not shining, the lighting conditions outside are still more advantageous than in any indoor spaces. Why? Even when the sky is cloudy, natural daylight is three to four times more powerful than artificial lighting and can therefore literally brighten your mood. Tip 2: Get enough exercise When it’s cold outside and warm inside, we find it even harder to motivate ourselves to exercise regularly. Yet exercise is a proven remedy for negative thoughts and depressive moods. Walks in the snow, sledding or jogging are not only healthy for the body, but – especially in winter – also for the mind. Overcome your inner pig dog and you will see that a little activity will do you good. Tip 3: Pay attention to a healthy diet A healthy and balanced diet gives you new energy and promotes your well-being – an important factor in the fight against the winter blues. Foods containing iron in particular can counteract tiredness and fatigue. They include walnuts, flaxseeds, blueberries, red meat, beet, grapes, lentils, etc. Also, do not neglect enough fluids and hydration. Vitamin C not only strengthens the immune system, it can also reduce inner restlessness and anxiety. This valuable vitamin is found in citrus fruits, broccoli and peppers, for example Tip 4: Create beautiful moments In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, don’t forget to indulge yourself now and then.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: „Ultra Light Sun Block SPF 50+“ from Team Dr. Joseph

About this Sun Block I was particularly excited, because I simply love the products from Team Dr. Joseph. Since 1986, they have been a successful symbiosis of high-tech and nature. Here, technological know-how is combined with highly effective, natural raw materials. And the people behind them are simply likeable. I got to know and appreciate the founder Dr. Joseph Franz and his sons myself in South Tyrol. UV protection without whitening effect It was therefore a special pleasure to try out the new product, a sunscreen for summer and winter, myself. Especially with UV protection with factor 50+ I am very critical. Mostly I am bothered by the well-known whitening effect of mineral UV filters (“inorganic” or “physical filters”). These are usually mineral white pigments (e.g. zinc or titanium), which lie on the skin like small mirrors and reflect the UV light. In addition, many of these products feel heavy and pappy already when applied. In this respect, the “Ultra Light Sun Block” with SPF 50+ has positively surprised me. The cream comes delicately liquid from the dispenser, is light, absorbs super quickly and does not whiten the surface. The skin neither feels dry nor shines unpleasantly. Because biotechnological hyaluronic acid provides intense moisture, it can smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Also protects from Blue Light You can tell that the product is not a “quick fix”. Four years of intensive research and development have gone into the innovative combination of different sun filters. It offers broadband protection against UVA and UVB rays and also protects against the harmful effects of artificial light (HEV rays). High Energy Visible – i.e. high-energy visible light – often referred to as Blue Light, is what we consume every day via cell phone, tablet or computer. But these are by no means all the high-tech natural goodies that are contained in the light Sun Block: Wild carrot can prevent premature skin aging, has a firming effect, protects cells, soothes and is rich in vitamins. Just like tocopherol (natural vitamin E), sea buckthorn is considered an effective antioxidant, which also supports collagen production and thus has a smoothing effect. Also a radical scavenger, even with anti-blue-light effect, is butterfly bush. Allantoin and mallow soothe and smooth the skin, making it supple. It is best to apply the UV protection over the day cream to the face, neck and décolleté all year round, as required. Always allow the day cream to absorb well first.… weiterlesen

Glow for the skin – what is it actually?

Actually, you can no longer hear the word glow. Hardly any cosmetics manufacturer does not have at least one product in its range that promises glow for the skin. The beauty pages of women’s magazines outdo each other with recommendations for a “glowy” or “dewy” complexion. For men, by the way, glow is never to be mentioned; there, glow tends to be equated with oily. But what actually makes this mysterious glow of the female skin? Glow means as much as radiate or shine. The term has a positive connotation because it means softly glowing skin that looks as if an Insta-filter has been placed over it. A baby’s skin naturally possesses it. Even in youth, this rosy freshness is still present because the skin is well supplied with blood and has enough elasticity. Unfortunately, this natural glow diminishes with age, when environmental damage affects the skin and it is already thinner and less even due to wrinkles and pigment spots. It becomes visibly paler and loses its radiant appearance. What you got from nature when you were young, you need to work on it later. Perfect skin does not exist Don’t be embarrassed if your skin isn’t absolutely flawless. It only exists on TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest anyway, thanks to filters and light corrections. True, social media would have us believe that hair, pimple and pore-free skin is the norm and everything else is somehow „wrong“ with it. But that’s absolute nonsense! “When people talk about ‘radiant skin,’ they usually mean an even complexion without spots – a smooth surface that reflects light in a flattering way,” confirms London dermatologist Dr. Justine Kluk. It’s a misconception that only glowing skin is healthy, and if it’s not, you’re doing something wrong. Although you eat healthy, get enough sleep, moisturize your skin, wear sunscreen, don’t smoke, and all of these can obviously be better for your body and your skin, ‘glow’ is not a reliable indicator of your health,” Dr. Kluk says. Even if someone has acne or rosacea, they may basically be a healthy person. Step by step This is not to say that you can’t improve the appearance of your skin. But you should not try to achieve everything at once, but always set yourself only one goal. Otherwise, you could overtax your skin. It’s best to keep your routine as simple as possible and approach the goal you set step by step.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: Eyebrow Serum „ukbrow“ from UK Skinlabs

Thin and plucked up, that was once the fashion for the eyebrows. I still suffer from this sin of youth today. The trend then eventually went to a more natural look with thicker brow arches. But the “holes” in mine simply could no longer be closed. I then got my brows tattooed, which didn’t really hide the bald spots. When the eyelash and brow serums came on the market, I also tried all of them. I have tested myself up and down through various brands over the years. Some were based on the tissue hormone prostaglandin, others were purely plant-based. None of them worked for my problem, except that the remaining hairs grew so long that I had to cut them. The English eyebrow wonder Then came the summer vacation. In August of this year I read a colleague’s article online in Vogue. Tish Weinstock fared similarly to me, only she had naturally sparse brows. She, too, had used a lot of products without success, then at some point gave in to the fate of her almost non-existent brows, until a friend recommended the manufacturer of “ukbrow” to her. She decided to give this product, including the uklash eyelash serum, a chance. Weinstock wrote in her story that from week three onwards, her eyebrows began to gradually change. They became darker and thicker, the hairs longer. Even friends noticed and approached them about it. Herbal active ingredients Her report was so convincing and didn’t sound like paid advertising at all that I decided to order the product online from the “Feelunique” website. And it wasn’t expensive at £ 38 either, and shipping to Germany was free. Just a week later, the gold-colored pencil arrived at my home in the form of a mascara. The instructions for use were even available in German. The active ingredients in the serum are vitamins, peptides and plant extracts such as pumpkin seed, ginseng, grape seed and Japanese swamp star. “Ukbrow” is vegan and cruelty-free. I should apply the eyebrow serum once a day for 12 weeks for fuller and more defined brows. Obviously the right product for me, because the Swedish-Iranian company founder of the brand Nima Pourian says: “We have already helped so many women who had their brows plucked in the 90s or who lost them for medical reasons after chemotherapy, for example.” Yep, it grows! I am excited. I start my test that same evening.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: Facial treatment at the Anassa Thalasso Spa in Cyprus

In the northwestern part of the island of Cyprus on Chrysochou Bay, there is a fantastic 5-star hotel: Anassa, which belongs to the exclusive Thanos Group. It’s appearance lies somewhere between a grand palace and a relaxed beach resort, perched high above the Mediterranean. And it is home to the award-winning Thalasso Spa. A short walk from Pelagos restaurant, one of the hotel’s four dining venues, where I was served an exuberant variety of mezes at lunch, leads me to the hotel’s beauty temple. Fuchsia-colored bougainvillea cascades over whitewashed walls. The paved path to the spa meanders past the small Byzantine chapel along snow-white single-storey villas with gardens, it’s 30 degrees Celsius and most of the turquoise shutters are closed. Once and again, I catch a glimpse of the azure Mediterranean between the high pines and olive trees. Facial: Augustinus Bader’s anti-aging treatment Normally I avoid treatments in hotel spas, I can book facials in my hometown, where I know the beautician and she is familiar with my skin needs. For the the Anassa Thalasso Spa I make an exception: since June of this year, the hotel has been the first in the world to offer treatments with products from Augustinus Bader. The German stem cell expert’s power skincare range was launched in 2018 and has since been showered with prestigious beauty awards from VOGUE to Glamour to Tatler. I am convinced. I signed up for the VIP treatment, 90 minutes of regenerative facial, foot and hand massage included. My way to the cabin leads past the indoor pool, which looks like a Roman temple with its tall columns and ornamental tiles. A delicate scent of lavender accompanies me. How do Augustinus Bader’s products benefit the skin? Augustinus Bader is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of stem cell and biomedicine. As head of stem cell research at the University of Leipzig, Augustinus Bader developed a wound gel in 2008 that heals third-degree burns without surgery or skin transplant. The gel works because it sends a series of healing signals to the wound or burned site. This activates the skin cells and enables the healing process. Based on this insight, the stem cell specialist initially developed two facial care products, “The Cream” and “The Rich Cream”, which he launched in 2018. The aim of the duo: vitamins, nutrients and minerals that bring the healing information to the skin’s own stem cells with the help of transport molecules.… weiterlesen

What are the Benefits of a Face Mist?

Now, after the summer, one often has the feeling that the skin is drier than usual. Simply spray moisture on, that sounds very tempting. But can these face mists really do anything? The small spray bottles containing face mist are touted by the beauty industry as the perfect freshness kick and stimulant for every occasion. Regardless of whether you need a second wake-up call in the morning after getting up or whether your skin is down at noon. “A face mist is used to refresh the skin quickly,” Loretta Miraglia, Senior Vice President Product Development at La Mer, once explained to me at a summer lunch while she was pulling a bottle out of her pocket. “It invigorates, revitalizes, soothes and relaxes the skin. At the same time, it irons out small wrinkles caused by dryness.“ Pure water instead of face mist? Doesn’t water serve the same purpose? The answer is “no”, it doesn’t work with normal water. It is usually much too chalky and dries out the skin even more. However, it does matter which facial spray you use. Sure, they all provide moisture. That is undisputed. But it really depends on the ingredients. Which active substances are contained and in which concentration – that is the prerequisite for them to actually work for the skin. Compared to the past, the new facial sprays are a kind of sprayable serum. They no longer only contain flower or thermal water, but often active substances such as those found in a serum. These can do a lot more than soothe and moisturize. The power formulas in the sprays include, for example, vitamins, niacinamide, probiotics, aloe vera, resveratrol or cannabidiol, magnesium salts and hyaluron, also bleaching substances are also used. Check out your face mist When buying, first pay attention to the basic substances that the spray contains humectants. Glycerin or hyaluronic acid should be in there. Then you already have the right basis. It helps to lock the moisture in the skin and moisturize the surface. Second, you should take a close look at the active ingredients so that they are adapted to the current needs of your skin. Only with the right formulation are they more than a refreshing spray, they have the power to make a difference. In the appropriate composition, they can fight acne, provide a dry complexion with lasting moisture and also optimize the absorption of the subsequent skin care products.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: „Body After Sun“ from Dr. Schrammek

I love the sun, even if it has been a bit rare in this country this summer. It goes without saying that when it shines, I protect myself from UV rays with a good and caring sunscreen product. And yet the skin is often dried out in the evening. Especially on the arms, on the cleavage and even worse on the legs. From an after sun product, I expect the skin to feel plumped up and cared for and not to leave it feeling greasy. Body Science The products of Dr. Schrammek I have trusted for a long time. Do you still have in mind that it was the first German “Doctor Brand” and that it has been represented in 60 countries for over 60 years? In any case, there is a new sun protection and care series that combines effective UV and cell protection with intensive care. After sun freshness I am extremely enthusiastic about the after sun care. It’s a transparent, gel-like formulation. What I noticed positively when opening the tube is the subtle fresh scent. You can feel the refreshment immediately on the skin. Pleasant coolness spreads. Any feeling of heat disappears and redness is reduced.Tried and tested active ingredients such as panthenol, sea salt and bisabolol moisturize the skin and give it a velvety matt look, without the otherwise so common greasy shimmer of after sun products. In addition, vitamin E has an antioxidant and smoothing effect. The summer classic coconut oil should not be missing because of its nourishing and anti-inflammatory properties. Applied regularly, the tan stays longer and more even with this after sun care. „Body After Sun Body Science“ from Dr Schrammek derma.cosmetic, 200 ml, 28,00 €… weiterlesen
