How to Find the Best Skincare for Men

Gentlemen. There is more to a skincare routine than your morning shave. If your facial care routine consists of a razor and some random shaving cream – listen up. Men’s skincare is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Everything from cleansers, moisturizers to sunscreen should be part of your skincare regimen. You cannot hide behind that beard or scruff forever Many men prefer beards to shaving so they don’t have to deal with irritation and skin issues that many experience. Well, skin issues may be rooted in your lifestyle, genetics or how you’re treating your skin, so don’t blame your razor. However, if shaving is the sum of your grooming practice, this can contribute to a build up of dirt, sebum and dead skin cells leading to clogged pores, blackheads, blemishes and ingrown hairs that will further cause that irritation that you’re trying to avoid. Admit it. You spend more time caring for car or your smart phone than your skin. Getting rid of that “5 o’clock shadow” or trimming your beard should be part of your routine, not your only routine. Just like your car, skin needs maintenance, too. The most important skincare step of the day – and night Cleansing your face in the morning, and at night, should be as routine as brushing your teeth. The best start to your skincare routine is to open up those pores in a warm shower. The steam will help as well as loosen up dirt and impurities on the skin surface. If you have a fuller beard, soak in that steam for a few extra minutes. Once those pores have had a chance to open up, wash your face, and your neck, with a daily facial cleanser best suited to your skin. Choose men’s skincare products (don’t bother with your wife’s or girlfriend’s brand) as they are specifically formulated for men’s thicker facial skin and larger pores. Using a face scrub or exfoliator could prove helpful to your overall skin health, removing, excess oil, stubborn dry skin or dead skin cells. What type of skin do you have? Greasy nose and forehead, blackheads? Probably oily skin. A balancing cleanser will remove impurities and help control oil without drying skin. Bar soap is good, but specially-formulated facial cleansers are better. Lather up. Itchy cheeks, redness? Sounds like dry skin. A gentle exfoliating cleanser, with natural ingredients, will whisk away dirt and dead skin, leaving it feeling nourished and comfortable.… weiterlesen

Tested for you: „Paradise Dual Palette“ from Dear Dahlia

Never heard of the Dual Palette and Dear Dahlia? It is a vegan luxury cosmetic line from Asia. There the dahlia is a symbol of timeless beauty. But not only that. Each product contains the Dahlia Variabilis flower extract in addition to many other certified organic ingredients. This makes the products rich in antioxidants and ensures the skin is supplied with moisture. And it is easy to recognize on the OTC shelves, because Dear Dahlia stands out from all other products with its octagonal packaging in a marble design, which, by the way, stands for the dahlia in its full bloom.  Multifunctional dual palette I love products with multiple uses, especially when you are on the go and – hopefully soon again – travel a lot. The “Paradise Dual Palette” is exactly my case, and the color duo “Fortbildden Fig” was made for me. The duo consists of a darker, rosewood-colored balm and a lighter powder in dusky pink for the eyes, cheeks and lips. The two perfectly coordinated color nuances can be combined in many ways to create new looks. I also like to layer them both. If the cheeks should be less accentuated, I apply the balm first and put a touch of the lighter powder over it. Only on the lips I dab a little powder in the middle of the lower lip to highlight them. Spread it all over, the lips would become too dry. The double-sided mirror in the middle of the box is ideal for a touch-up on the go. At home, however, it is better to use a larger copy of make-up. “Paradise Dual Palette” by Dear Dahlia, 9 color nuances, 32 US$ each… weiterlesen

Tested for you: „T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial“ from Drunk Elephant

First a few words about the optic. I like the look of the American beauty label, and the humorous name makes the products want to see. The name “Drunk Elephant” was the idea of the founder Tiffany Masterson. How did she come up with it? She got the inspiration from the fruits of the African marula tree, or rather from the elephants, who like to eat them. If they eat the overripe, fermented mirabelle-like fruits from the ground, the elephant soon stumbles tipsy through the savannah. And one of the main ingredients of the “Drunk Elephant” line is marula oil….What Tiffany Masterson does without in her skincare are the so-called “Suspicious Six”, substances that are known to irritate the skin such as essential oils, chemical UV filters, fragrances, alcohol, silicones and sulfates. She herself wants her care to be described as “clean-clinical”, she doesn’t want the label to be called classic organic skincare. Her credo is: to combine the best and most effective from both worlds – natural cosmetics and conventional, synthetic cosmetics. What makes me particularly curious is the “T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial ”because it consists of a high fruit acid formulation. Namely 25 percent Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) from glycolic acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid and citric acid to remove the dead skin cells and to boost cell activity. Added to this are two percent beta-hydroxy acid (salicylic acid), which removes impurities from the pores. And finally, chickpea flour is supposed to balance the skin. Pretty acid The chickpea flour gives the mask its sand-colored tint. I like that, because green or white on the face always looks like Halloween. The texture from the airless dispenser can be easily spread over the skin. I avoid the eye area better because of the high acid content. These are then also noticeable on the skin. It tingles in the first few minutes, even a little more on the nostrils. But it will stop soon. After 20 minutes I remove the mask with lukewarm water. I expect redness at least on the cheeks. But surprisingly, these fail to appear. The skin actually feels and looks baby-soft. Then I apply the marula oil. It nourishes the skin and provides it with a high level of antioxidants. I am skeptical because oil tends to cause pimples in me. But actually, Marula moves in quickly and I can take it well. From now on it’s Sukari Time once a week.… weiterlesen

Mirror, Mirror on the wall…

The chin has moved into focus in aesthetic medicine. According to a representative survey, Elyas M’Barek has the most attractive jawline for men and Selena Gomez for women. The so-called jawline is currently a big trend in social media. It shapes the face and gives it contour. A representative survey carried out on behalf of Allergan Aesthetics among Germans between the ages of 16 and 64 in October 2020 picks up on the current trend. The attractiveness of different chin shapes – distinctive, rounded and pointed – was examined on the basis of three female and three male celebrities. The result: a total of 41.2% of all respondents found Elyas M’Barek’s jaw shape very attractive or attractive. With this value, the successful German actor is way ahead of Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, whose chin is rated as attractive by 29%. Dr. Babak Esfahani, specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery in Cologne, is not surprised by this result: “According to the principles of aesthetics, a face and also the chin-jaw line appear attractive if they have ideal proportions, angles and certain relationships to one another. M’Barek fulfills this principle most of the requested jaw shapes. Leonardo DiCaprio, on the other hand, has a chin that is too narrow in relation to the proportions of his face ”. The German actor also more than doubled another Hollywood celebrity: Robert Pattinson. Only 19.8% of all respondents found the rather pointed chin very attractive or attractive. According to the principles of aesthetics, a face and also the chin-jaw line are attractive if they have ideal proportions, angles and certain relationships to one another. This result is surprising, because Pattinson is currently one of the most successful Hollywood actors who will soon play the new “Batman”. Dr. Babak Esfahani, Plastic Surgent in Cologne: “Robert Pattinson has a clearly distinctive chin line, but from an aesthetic point of view, his chin is too small and too pointed. Rather unusual for the role. Because all superheroes – and by the way all previous US presidents – have one thing in common: a distinctive chin.” For women, soft comes before striking While a broad chin is considered attractive for male faces, the picture is different for women: Selena Gomez, whose face is characterized by soft, rounded contours, ranks first among the attractive chin shapes. 41.6% of all respondents rate the singer’s chin as very attractive or attractive. Tested for you: shi/dto „Face Serum Night“

I couldn’t pronounce the name before. shi/dto is Japanese and is pronounced schi do. The new skin care series doesn’t even come from the Far East, but is Made in Germany. The formulations are based on the latest biochemical technologies and were created in collaboration with top laboratories in the fields of biology, chemistry, biophysics and medicine. There are two series, “Make a Wish” for women and – less imaginative – “Men” for men. The goals are the same: to repair cell damage caused by e.g. B. cause fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and brown spots, and the protection of healthy skin against future damage from environmental influences. Agents of the night I concentrated on the “Hyperbolic Skin Firming Serum Night” (why only companies have to come up with such long names!) from the Supreme Revitalizing Night Care. Make a wish – my wish was that I only apply one care product in the evening and my skin wakes up the next morning without feeling tight. That has already worked with the night serum. It can be spread smoothly on the cleansed face and neck with just a few drops, is quickly absorbed and the skin feels well pampered. Deeper wrinkles, including one above my upper lip, should be treated more intensively. Done. The next morning my skin is silky smooth, not a hint of dryness, which is often noticeable on my side areas and on my cheeks. The three most important players in the serum are called ChroNOline, a new biomimetic tetrapeptide that ensures suppleness and firmness. The technical active ingredient Progeline DNA Agent is supposed to increase skin firmness, elasticity and viscoelasticity and counteract the sagging of the tissue. And last but not least, the tried and tested hyaluronic acid, which not only provides the skin with moisture, but also helps older, dull cells on the surface of the skin to loosen. After two weeks, the finest lines seem to have been minimized, and my skin is actually more radiant. Only the stupid, deep crease is still there! shi/dto „Supreme Revitalizing Hyperbolic Skin Firming Serum Night“ , 50 ml, ca 70 Euro… weiterlesen

Tested for you: Hillinger Cosmetics „Sauvignon Masque“

The name raises expectations. But anyone who thinks that the typical fruity note of a Sauvignon Blanc rises into their noses with the cream mask on their face will be disappointed. You better grab a bottle of Sauvignon from the famous Austrian winemaker Leo Hillinger. Incidentally, he is exactly who is behind the new organic cosmetic line (www. whenvinaturals.com/en). To do this, he not only processes the grapes themselves, but also everything that the vine provides in terms of goodies – from the buds to the pips to the grape water. From the texture of the mask you can only smell a slightly sour wine note with imagination. But the smell is ultimately not decisive for such a product, the effect is much more important. The most important ingredient is resveratrol, a polyphenol from the skin of red grapes, which stimulates cells and has a firming effect. It is supported by other polyphenols such as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), which are considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants found in nature. In addition, organic grape seed oil and water, grape seed and bud extract. So smooth The mask is light and creamy on the skin. After just a few minutes, my skin “swallowed” them in various places on the cheeks and the forehead where the skin is especially dry. After 15 minutes it is almost completely absorbed. My skin is obviously very thirsty. I remove the few remaining cream residues with a paper towel. The mirror check: the complexion looks well supplied with blood and looks plump. The finger check: the skin feels soft and nourished thanks to care and moisturizing substances such as natural hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, evening primrose oil, vitamins E and C. „Sauvignon Masque“ von Hillinger Cosmetics, 75ml, ca. 20 Euro… weiterlesen

For every Wrinkle the Right Hyaluronic Acid Filler

The nasolabial fold bothers you? Or the little hanging cheeks? With the right hyaluronic acid fillers, wrinkles can be smoothed and contours improved – and thus completely natural-looking results can be achieved. What many do not know: It is not necessarily the annoying wrinkle that is treated, but a completely different part in order to get the desired result. Dr. Isabel Edusei, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery from Berlin, explains what she means by modern filler treatments. Why is it no longer directly injected under the fold, but mostly treated with hyaluronic acid in completely different places? Dr. Isabel Edusei: The nasolabial fold is a very good example of this. It is an expression of a structural weakness in the cheek region. To put it simply: the soft tissue sinks here with the aging process, but is held up by a cord of connective tissue that extends from the nostril to the corner of the mouth. This results in a contour jump that we classically call the nasolabial fold. If we want to smooth this wrinkle, we have to treat the cause of what happened, that is, first fix the soft tissue on the zygomatic bone again and thus stabilize the midface. I use so-called structure fillers from the Vycross collection such as Voluma and Volux from Juvéderm. The term Vycross Technologie is based on a special, patented gel formulation that ensures that the filler is quickly integrated into the skin tissue and that the result can therefore appear particularly natural. Are there more such surprising effects? Yes, a lateral straightening of the eyebrows and upper eyelids can be achieved by working in the temple area. When the chin is raised, the neck tightens. And when hyaluronic acid filler is used on the lateral arch of the jaw approximately below the ears, the lateral lower jaw line tightens. Can individual areas such as the chin be treated specifically or should the entire face always be included? First of all, it is important to analyze exactly which areas of the face are suffering from structural weaknesses, what are the causes and how they can be treated. For example, a 20 year old woman may have problems in the same facial area as a 45 year old. The treatment in this case is identical and it does not always have to include the whole face. If there has not yet been any significant structural breakdown in the face, it is of course also possible to set special accents.… weiterlesen

Testet for you: Grn „Anti-Wrinkle Mask“

The name reads a bit awkward: GRN, because the “ü” has been replaced by a leaf. The German word „grün“ means „green“ in English. The design makes sense when you know that it is a certified organic cosmetics brand from Germany that only came onto the market last year. Now I’ve got it too. I like that all Grün Elements masks are packed in handy pouches with a practical screw cap. This not only saves waste compared to conventional tubes and pots, but is also perfect when traveling. Apply mask and close again. There are three variants: Calm & Clear with yellow clay against impurities, hydration with honey & hemp for dry skin and rejuvenation with grape & olive for firming. The three can also be used for multimasking in order to tailor them precisely to the current needs of the various areas of the face. Especially those who have to wear the protection face mask for many hours every day know the problem that the region in the mouth and chin area reacts differently than, for example, on the cheeks. For me personally, however, this is too much “blotchy” on the face, so I limit myself to the latter for demanding skin. The smell test first The mask smells pleasantly “green”. I smell more grapes than olives, but the beeswax is the most intense. The texture is pleasantly rich and creamy. It is easy to spread and is so extensive that the resealable 40ml sachet is safely sufficient for four applications on the face and décolleté. I leave out the eye and mouth area. The mask is not tight on the skin, but you can tell that something is happening under the layer of cream. After a good 10 minutes, the skin has already absorbed it in many places. I remove the remains with a damp cloth. The complexion is even, feels soft and slightly plumped up. It’s just a shame that the beautiful result cannot be preserved longer than a day. But unfortunately that doesn’t work with any cosmetic product. Grn „Anti-Wrinkle Maske“ , 40 ml, ca. 6 Euro… weiterlesen

That Gets Under Your Skin

Cosmetics are good and useful. But at most they can provide the skin with more energy in the short term. If you want more, you have to trust a Beauty Doc – an experienced, please! A new method is particularly promising. It is supposed to flood the tissue with moisture from the inside. Its name: Profhilo. Your skin looks a bit tired? And although you drink enough water, largely avoid alcohol and cigarettes and also get enough sleep. Then you are a candidate for Profhilo. This innovative process was recognized as the best anti-aging product at the Anti-Aging Medicine European Congress in Paris in 2015. It is based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a proven substance that also occurs naturally in the body. Their power lies in their high water binding capacity. More specifically, 1 gram of HA can bind up to 6 liters of water. Don’t worry, the face doesn’t look injected or puffy up afterwards. This is due to the special formulation of this highly concentrated hyaluronic acid. A special heating process combines high and low molecular weight HA chains into a hybrid. More moisture, more firmness Dr. Antje Söller from the Haut-und-Laserzentrum Munich, who has tried the method on herself and has beautified many patients with it, says: “With this method, we do not inject individual wrinkles, but instead set a small deposit at certain, fixed points that is easily visible for an hour or two. From this depot, this relatively thin hyaluronic acid floods under the skin layers and spreads over a large area, which means we don’t get this puffy effect. “The effect is a combination of moisture retention and skin tightening. Dr. Söller: “A specificity of this hyaluronic acid is that it is processed in such a way that it stimulates the body’s collagen and elastin production.” Five punctures per side Before the syringe is attached, the doctor marks five injection points per half of the face with a white eye pencil: On each side they are located directly in front of the ear, on the cheek, on the nasolabial fold, above the jawbone and on the chin area. The hyaluronic acid is injected subcutaneously, i.e. into the hypodermis. You hardly feel the punctures. After five minutes everything is over. No blood flows. Afterwards, there are small bumps at the puncture sites, but these are almost invisible after a short massage by the practitioner. There will be a lot going on under the skin over the next few days as the 64 mg hyaluronic acid is gradually distributed over 2 ml of the product that was injected.… weiterlesen

Hyaluronic Acid: What Advantage does it Really have in Creams?

Whether day skin care, serum or gel, hyaluronic acid is lauded as THE miracle weapon in the field of anti-aging. It is purported to cushion the skin, smooth wrinkles and balance roughness. But is the praise really justified? The body’s own natural substance Hyaluronic acid (HA for short) is, at least, not foreign to the body. Chemically speaking, it is a polysaccharide, i.e. a multiple sugar, and thus an important component of various types of connective tissue. It is the main component of our synovial fluid and lubricates the joints. The largest proportion of HA, about 50 percent, is stored in the skin. Its task is to bind enormous amounts of water – up to six liters per gram. Unfortunately, the body’s own production also decreases with age, starting from around the age of 25. At 50, the water reservoirs are only half full and this begins to become noticeable in the outside appearance: Fine lines and wrinkles, sunken cheeks, crow’s feet or a deepening of the nasolabial fold are classic signs of hyaluronic acid deficiency. The elasticity of one’s own skin, the so-called skin turgor, can be measured easily: one raises a skin fold on the hand with two fingers and releases it. Depending on the moisture content, the wrinkle remains or restores itself elastically. By the way, cracking joints are also an indication that hyaluronic acid is decreasng in the synovial fluid. Chain reaction The empty depots cannot be filled as easily as one might imagine, and certainly not with an externally applied cream. Whether this has an effect and what that effect may be is mainly due to the size of the HA molecules. Simone Presto, physician and expert for the Eucerin HyaluronPlus series, confirms this: “The long-chain (high-molecular) hyaluronic acid is a very large molecule which remains on the skin. The medium-chain hyaluronic acid penetrates a little deeper into the superficial skin layers through the epidermis, up to about the middle of the 12 epidermal layers. The short-chain (low-molecular) hyaluronic acid can penetrate more deeply.” But, as the doctor admits, there is a limit here as well. Even the smallest HA molecules cannot break through the basal membrane, the bottom layer of the epidermis, where cells are constantly produced. No innovative cosmetic can overcome this. The short-chain hyaluronic acid is deposited there and swells up because it binds water from the tissue. In this way, it can not only ensure that wrinkles become flatter, but also that cell communication is maintained.… weiterlesen
